Where:  Jefferson Hall (1525 Santa Barbara Street)

Alan's long-running Wednesday workshop is open to players of all abilities to come learn and perform short form, comedy improv. It's a welcoming environment for beginners, as well as a place for more experienced players to practice their skills. From 7:30 until 8:00, there is an orientation for new players and warm-ups for everyone. If you are new to improv or to Santa Barbara Improv, try to show up at 7:30 so Alan can meet and talk with you about the class and your experience with improv or performing.  From 8:00 until 9:00 or so, we work on short-form improv games and exercises. Depending on the class, from 9:00 until 10:00 we'll either continue working on short-form improv, or we'll work on long-form skills.

Level UP

Instructor: Garrett Blair

When: 6 Thursdays starting April 18, 7:00-10pm

Where: Jefferson Hall (1525 Santa Barbara Street)

Cost: $180 for the 6 week class

Level Up is an ongoing series of classes that explore specific improv skills and concepts designed to elevate your craft to the next level. Great for beginners who’ve participated in some Wednesday Workshops, and experienced improvisers seeking a fresh approach.

In this session’s Yes And… Getting Out of Your Head, we will explore the foundational concept of improvisation, Yes And…, by strengthening its often-neglected counterpart, Letting Go. In order to be completely ready to say, “yes, and…” to our partner’s idea, we must be willing to let go of our own. Through a whole host of fast-paced, hilarious, and creative games and activities, we will unleash our idea generating machines. By working to free ourselves of that little voice in our heads that censors, considers, judges, and filters our own ideas,  we can become 100% available and ready to receive the gifts from our partners.

If you are interested in joining this class, you can contact any of the instructors or fill out the form below. All we need is your name and email address, but feel free to add a message if you have any questions.

Longform Improv Classes

Instructors: Amy Nash, George Schreiber

Amy Nash and George Schreiber together bring over 15 years of long-form improv training and performing, and have been resident ensemble players at comedy theaters in New York, LA, and Philadelphia. They have been teaching and coaching long-form in Santa Barbara for the past 3 years and are thrilled to be leading the charge for creating a space for this type of performance.

Introduction to Longform Improv

When: 6 Thursdays starting April 18, 7:00-10pm

Where: Blake Lounge (1525 Santa Barbara Street, upstairs)

Cost: $180 for the 6 week class

This introductory six-week class will focus on the foundational elements of creating improvised long-form. We will focus heavily on creating solid, two-person scenes in the moment. We will explore the meanings of acceptance, agreement and collaboration and how they work in tandem with commitment, spontaneity, and deep listening. From this tasty stew, we will create our scenes. Finally, we will begin to examine what it means to create an improvised piece by an ensemble and introduce how to apply these skills to long-form performance.

There will be a showcase at the end of the session for friends and family.

If you are interested in joining this class, you can contact any of the instructors or fill out the from below. All we need is your name and email address, but feel free to add a message if you have any questions.
