Welcome to the Santa Barbara Improv Workshop

We are an open workshop where players of all abilities are invited to come and learn and perform short form, comedy improv. We try to provide a fun and welcoming environment for beginners, as well as a place for more experienced players to practice their skills.

  • When: Every Wednesday from 7:30 pm to 10:00 pm
  • Where: 1525 Santa Barbara Street, Santa Barbara, CA 93101 [MAP]
  • Cost: $8 per night (First night is free!)
  • Level: No levels, all are welcome!
  • Phone: (805) 680-0455
  • email: alan@sbimprov.com

From 7:30 until 8:00 we do orientation for new players and warm-ups for everyone. If you are new to improv or to the SBIW, try to show up at 7:30 so I can meet and talk with you about the class and your experience with improv or performing.

From 8:00 until 9:00 or so, we work on short-form improv games and exercises.

And depending on the class, from 9:00 until 10:00 we’ll either continue working on short-form improv, or we’ll work on long-form skills.

We have a regular performance, the first Saturday of every month. There is no regular format to our shows. Most are put together by players from the workshop, some shows have a theme (the Star Wars improv show happens in May), and some are put on by organized troupes. Occasionally we have recital shows were new players can experience their first performance in front of family and friends.

  1. Alan, the information on the June 6th, page contradicts itself….
The poster says 1535 Santa Barbara Street, but the info right below that says 1525 Santa Barbara Street.

  2. Hi Paul,
Both addresses are correct. The 1535 address is for the Unitarian Society as a whole, and 1525 is the address on the building where we have the show (Jefferson Hall), which is part of the Society.
    Hope to see you there!

  3. Hi Allen,
I have wanted to join the weekly workshops but travel in my work a great deal. I can be there this coming Wednesday, Nov 13th if the class is still active. Thanks for the enlightenment!

I am a friend of Kathy Gruver and she has been encouraging me to ‘come try it out’!!!!
